According to the American Manufacturing Technology Association (AMT) and the American Machine Tool Distributors Association (AMTDA), in March 2009, US machine tool consumption was $162.9 million, an increase of 22.3% from February 2009, but compared to March 2008. The $5.7973 billion still fell sharply by 71.9%.
From January to March 2009, the total consumption of machine tools was $399.56 million, a figure that was 68.6% lower than the figure for the same period in 2008.
In terms of product categories, the consumption of metal cutting machine tools in March 2009 was 1.4398 billion US dollars, up 35% from the previous month and down 72.9% from the same period last year. The consumption of metal forming and manufacturing machine tools was US$ 18.96 million, a decrease of 28.6% from the previous month and a decrease of 60.8% from the same period last year. The chart below shows the trend of changes in US machine tool consumption from March 2008 to March 2009.
AMTDA Chairman Peter Borden said that since the US machine tool consumption fell to an all-time low in January 2009, the consumption in the past two months has continued to rise. This rebound may be due to the fact that some large importers sell their year-end stocks, so the second quarter data can really tell us whether we have “goed out of the bottomâ€. It is predicted that US machine tool sales will be reduced by at least 50% in 2009 compared to 2008, and the current data is close to this forecast.
The report is also divided according to the five geographical regions of the United States, and the consumption of each region is counted.
