On September 27th, the State’s major science and technology infrastructure “steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device†passed acceptance in Hefei, making China the fifth country after the United States, France, the Netherlands, and Japan with a steady state strong magnetic field. It is understood that at present, the device has built 3 field-strength water-cooled magnets, and the 40T-class hybrid magnet with the world's second-largest field strength will launch an impact on the 45T world record.
The strong magnetic field is an extreme experimental condition for exploring the frontiers of science. It has an irreplaceable role in discovering new phenomena and giving birth to new technologies. The “Stable Magnetic Field Experimental Device†was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2008. The Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the construction of a legal entity, and the University of Science and Technology of China is a joint construction unit. After many years of independent innovation, the research and development team broke the international technical barriers and built 3 water-cooled magnets with strong world record, setting up the world's second 40T-class hybrid magnet following the United States.
The expert committee appraisal believes that the indicators of the installations have reached or significantly exceeded the performance indicators approved by the state, and "magnet technology and comprehensive performance lead the world." Hans Schneider-Monta, a world-renowned high-field magnet expert, stated that as one of the only two hybrid magnets over 40T in the world, Hefei's hybrid magnets have the potential to reach 45T, making China occupy an important position in the field of international strong magnetic fields.
It is understood that, as an important infrastructure for the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, the steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device adopts an innovative mode of “operating while building,†and has made a series of breakthroughs in scientific research results, talent team, and achievement transformation.
Wang Yingyu, secretary of the Party Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences, introduced that the installation of the device from the end of 2010 to last year provided experimental conditions for 106 research institutes such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, and China University of Science and Technology, and published in the journals such as Science and Nature. With 839 high-level dissertations, the output has exceeded the strong magnetic fields of France and the Netherlands in similar scale.
In order to support the construction of a strong magnetic field, the Anhui and Hefei municipal governments have issued a number of innovation policies in the areas of science and technology systems and the introduction of talents. At present, the strong magnetic field has gathered more than 40 highly-advanced talents, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and national “Thousand Talents Programâ€, attracting more than 30 returnees represented by “Harvard Ph.D.â€.
