Rice University researchers have just announced a prototype of a new type of lithium-based rechargeable battery that has three times the capacity of current lithium-ion batteries. This technology is expected to become a new development of lithium metal batteries (with no success precedent in the industry), especially to solve the "dendritic" problem that seriously affects the battery life, and even caused a short circuit fire explosion (also due to lithium deposition ). Rice University chemist James Tour and colleagues have come up with a solution to this problem -- the use of "unique anodes" of carbon and graphene nanotubes.
These hybrid nanotubes will replace the graphite anodes previously used in commercial lithium-ion batteries.
In a recent statement, it stated that the use of this new technology, as well as a lithium metal battery coated with a layer of carbon, can prevent the dendritic sprawling on the anode (otherwise it will eventually lead to a significant shrinkage short circuit).
According to the article, the lithium prototype battery can store 3,351 mAh of energy per gram, which is a great improvement over the current technology. Consumer electronics such as smart phones and tablets will benefit the most, and the device's battery life and charging rate will become longer.
Of course, Rice University is not the first organization that has recently made progress in lithium-ion battery research.
The United States Naval Research Laboratory has just ushered in a milestone in the development of zinc-based batteries. Its safety is higher than that of lithium-ion batteries, but it is still not practical enough for charging.
By developing a 3D “sponge†electrode, researchers are expected to circumvent this problem, thereby creating a battery that is both affordable and safe and can be recharged multiple times.
