Research progress on thermoacoustic refrigeration technology for liquefaction of natural gas

Thermoacoustic refrigeration technology with no moving parts is highly valued by the international refrigeration and cryogenic industry for its outstanding advantages such as high reliability, low production cost, and simple operation and maintenance. China has a large number of unconventional natural gas resources such as coalbed methane, shale gas, and oil field associated gas. It is urgently needed to develop small and medium-sized natural gas liquefaction technologies that do not consume electrical energy, have high reliability, and are easy to maintain.

Recently, Luo Ercang, a researcher at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, proposed a new type of thermoacoustic refrigeration technology that is completely motion-free. It can achieve cooling or liquefaction with heat instead of electrical energy. The technology forms a traveling-wave thermoacoustic circuit through a plurality of thermoacoustic engine units and vascular thermoacoustic refrigeration units with the same functions, thereby achieving highly efficient traveling wave conversion of thermoacoustic engines and efficient travelling wave transmission of acoustic power, and therefore the system It not only has higher cooling efficiency than the traditional thermoacoustic refrigeration technology, but also greatly reduces the size of the resonant tube in the system because of traveling wave transmission.

The research team's R&D personnel optimized the new thermoacoustic refrigeration system and conducted experimental verification in the natural gas liquefaction temperature zone. The operating temperature range of the system is between 110-130K. At 130K, nearly 1200W of cooling capacity is achieved, and the overall machine's relative Carnot efficiency reaches 8% (the relative carnot efficiency of the corresponding thermoacoustic engine subsystem is about 40%. The relevant Carnot efficiency of the system is about 20%). The experimental results show that the new system has achieved a significant increase in cooling efficiency, which is more than 35% higher than the best thermoacoustic technology in the current international temperature zone, and the compactness of the system has been greatly improved.
