Softbank collaborated with Israel’s Altair Semiconductor and Taiyo Electric to develop LTE modules for IoT devices. It will be available to IoT equipment developers in the first half of 2017.
The LTE module developed this time is characterized by small size and low power consumption, and is equipped with a modem IC conforming to the related standard "Category 1" such as the communication speed defined by 3GPP (communication speed: up to 5Mbps in the uplink and 10Mbps in the downlink). By changing the software, it is also possible to support the latest release "Release 13" related to wireless communications formulated by 3GPP.
If SoftBank's LTE network supports “Release 13†in the future, this module will be an ultra-low-power module that can be battery-powered for more than 10 years. This will facilitate the deployment of IoT applications, such as automatic meter readings for gas and water meters, and long-term battery-operated IoT applications such as elderly and child monitoring.
Altair is a semiconductor company that was founded in 2005 to develop LTE modem chips. In January 2016, Sony announced the acquisition of the company. Although the details of the modem ICs on this module have not yet been announced, the products previously developed and offered by Altair are integrated into the CPU core (MIPS core) of Imagination Technologies of the United Kingdom. The IC used this time is probably not the CPU core of British ARM, but the Imagination's CPU core.
