Ambri, a start-up company founded by MIT researchers, proposed a solution to solve the biggest challenge facing the solar cell industry: supplying power whenever needed. Their method is to use liquid metal batteries to store electricity at a cost that is less than a third of the existing solar storage technology.
Ambri received funding from Bill Gates and Vinod Khosla and plans to install two prototypes at a military base in Massachusetts and a wind farm in Hawaii in early 2015. It believes that liquid metal storage technology can change the entire battery industry. Compared with traditional batteries, liquid metal batteries are expensive, but their charge and discharge life is much longer and their efficiency is higher.
