When the wheat sheath blight is in the seedling stage, the lesions extend to the stem, and the first and second nodes of the stem become black to decay, leading to plant death. In the late growth stage of wheat, plants with severe stems often fail to produce spikes to form "bleeding ears", or although the ears can be extracted, but the grains are less dry, forming "white ears", and the white ears are mostly single-planted and susceptible to disease.
