Chemical fertilizers such as potassium chloride and ammonium chloride contain chloride ions, which are water-soluble chlorides when applied to the soil, which is detrimental to seed germination and seedling growth. Fertilizers such as potassium nitrate contain nitrate ions and should not be used as seed fertilizer.
