How to dispose of discarded citrus is a thorny problem in Mie Prefecture, a Japanese citrus origin. The researchers at Mie University have newly developed a technology that can use waste citrus to produce bio-butanol, a biofuel, which turns waste into treasure.
According to the report of Japan Agricultural News, in the citrus planting industry, a large number of citrus fruits are discarded every year due to broken fruits or poor quality. The yield of citrus production in Mie Prefecture reaches 10,000 tons per year. In addition to the juice residue, about 300 tons of unqualified citrus are discarded.
A research team led by Professor Tian Ruhao of the Graduate School of Mie University used the two kinds of microorganisms that can achieve saccharification and fermentation, and placed citrus and other wastes in a single container to achieve full saccharification. Biobutanol can be produced efficiently without prior treatment.
The researchers put into the fermenter the citrus peels with scars that could not be listed or rotted. The anaerobic C. utilis was used to achieve complete decomposition and saccharification in one week; then the C. acetobutylicum commonly used in fermentation production was used. Fermentation produces a fuel containing 70% biobutanol. In the experiment, a residue of 3 kilograms of citrus juice produced 20 ml of biobutanol within 10 days.
Using this technology, in addition to citrus, apples, beets, sweet potatoes, rice straw, waste paper, and waste from pulp production from wood can all be used to produce biobutanol.
At present, the mainstream of biofuels is bioethanol. Compared with bioethanol, biobutanol has obvious advantages in terms of fuel performance and economy, and can achieve a higher mixing ratio with gasoline without the need to modify the vehicle and store more energy per unit volume.
