Transistors are called the “brains” of digital products such as PDAs and smart phones. They are responsible for processing signals and data. In the latest research, Carmel McGidy and James Wissman, engineers from CMU Software Labs, developed a new method to create a fluidic transistor with digital functions and a soft deformability. They prepared a special alloy that was liquid at room temperature by blending the indium-gallium metal mixing ratio. After injecting rubber, it not only can conduct electricity like metal such as copper and silver, but also has the same soft elasticity as natural skin.

They made extensible circuit wires and electronic switches using liquid indium-gallium alloys. These transistors function by switching the connection of two droplets. Experiments have shown that when a volt voltage is applied in a certain direction, two droplets will be close to each other and connected to a metal bridge to achieve the conduction function; when a voltage is applied in the opposite direction, the droplets will be far away from each other , Conductive properties are off. As long as a slight amount of voltage is applied, the liquid transistor will have the same characteristics as a conventional transistor.

The researchers said that the two droplets are similar to the source and drain of the field-effect transistor. The shape of the droplet is regulated by voltage, and the transistor circuit can be switched on and off as needed. This kind of liquid metal circuit has the potential for endless applications in the future, such as the development of flying robots that mimic birds, can withstand the deformation pressure under the extreme conditions of high altitude while maintaining the electrical function, develop and use robots for search and rescue, and monitor diseases and recover the brain.
