Scientists develop "stained glass" style solar cells

Researchers at the University of Michigan have found a way to create colorful solar cells by mixing silicon and organic components, and have avoided some of the limitations of previous colored or transparent solar cells. Many existing color solar cell solutions may cause problems such as light scattering, background blurring, poor viewing angle, or color change. To avoid these deficiencies while maintaining transparency, Jay Guo and his research team made several key decisions.

First, the transparency requires a much thinner semiconductor layer (10-20 nm) than a conventional doped silicon solar cell. This problem is solved by a layer of a-Si (rather than crystalline silicon).

The flat-panel display industry has adopted a-Si technology on a large scale, so these existing technologies can be applied to building large solar cell windows.

The second question is how to achieve "color." Guo's research team found that by quieting different thicknesses of a-Si, they obtained different colors - 6nm blue, 11nm green, and 31nm red.

Using this colored solar cell, the team made a small piece of "American flag." Although the finished product looks like a piece of decorative glass, its current in sunlight is still about 2mA (2% conversion efficiency).

In contrast, the efficiency of "solid colors" organic solar panels is usually around 10%. Obviously, people need to make an appropriate trade-off between aesthetics and utility.

Guo said that the new technology has the advantage that it can not only be placed on the roof, but also can be wrapped around the entire side of the building.

In addition, the team also produced mirror-like opaque panels that can be reflected. Even if viewed in an angle of 60-70°, its color does not change.
