Self-healing materials in the traditional sense require the help of light and heat to repair cracks. According to foreign media reports, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin recently developed a gel material that can be self-healed without the need for external stimuli. It is expected to be used in large-scale applications in flexible electronic products, robots, and artificial skin. The gel material itself has a very strong electrical conductivity, and can self-repair the circuit cracks caused by repeated folding or bending. This breakthrough will help the development of devices such as biosensors.
This gel consists of a conductive polymer hydrogel and a coordination metal gel. Because of their unique size and structure, the reversible interactions between gel molecules make them capable of self-assembling like “glueâ€. At the same time this gel contains terpyridine-soluble molecules consisting of zinc atoms.
Guihua Yu, who led the research, believes that this material can be applied to batteries, biosensors, and electronic circuits.
His research team found that the use of a dopant ion to control the synthesis of this gel, its conductivity is nearly 10 times higher than the traditional rechargeable battery.
