An international cooperative research group recently announced that they have found a way to increase the production of hydrogen from seaweed, which may make the idea of large-scale, low-cost acquisition of hydrogen energy a reality in the future. The research report was published in the recent United States National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
In general, many algae, bacteria, and aquatic organisms can release hydrogen by absorbing light energy to decompose water molecules.
The author of the paper, Iftach Yacoby, explained that the hydrogen produced by algae is only a by-product and the yield is very small. However, if an enzyme is added to the seaweed living environment, the amount of sugar produced by the seaweed can be suppressed (it can only be inhibited and cannot be stopped, otherwise the seaweed will not survive), so that the hydrogen production can be improved. After research, they found that the total amount of hydrogen produced by seaweed increased by 4 times after adding the specified enzyme.
The leader of the study, Shuguang Zhang, deputy director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Biomedical Engineering Center, said: "This research process is highly likely to be industrialized." "You must understand this process." The practical value that will be generated, and thus the development of hydrogen fuel production to commercial scale, is only a matter of time and money. "The cost problem is solved and we will speed up its implementation."
Zhang Shuguang said that his team will further study how to increase the hydrogen production rate on this basis.
